Sweet Peas thrive in fertile, organically rich, well-drained soil. For maximum growth, plant seeds at the bottom of a 6-inch trench, filling the soil until the ground is level beneath the growing plants. In cooler climates, start 2-3 seeds per hole as soon as the soil can be worked, about 4-6 weeks before the last frost date. When the seedlings are 3-4 inches tall, thin them to 1 plant every 12 inches. Keep the soil moist, watering at the base of the plant to avoid wetting the foliage.

In warmer climates, sow sweet pea seeds in the fall for beautiful winter and spring blooms. The bushy plants will produce long, straight stems with 5-6 inch florets filled with colorful, long-lasting flowers. Knee High Sweet Peas do not need support, as the plants are naturally bushy.
